Lemongrass for eliminating dandruff, blackheads and acne
The fragrant and refreshing herb has noted health benefits, from being an excellent detox drink to warding off cough cold and maintaining proper digestion. Often referred to a close cousin of lemon because of its fragrance, lemongrass has several beauty benefits too.
How lemongrass helps?
Skin infections:
Citral, a major component present in lemongrass oil is effective in treating fungal and bacterial skin infections . This fungicidal component for a charge transfer complex with the fungal cells, thereby killing the fungi.
Dandruff:
Lemongrass oil helps reduce dandruff by fighting against Malassezia furfur , an yeast associated with dandruff. Hence, it is an active ingredient in many shampoos. It also helps in soothing a dry, itchy scalp. The scalp remains moisturised, but not oily, as the astringent properties of lemongrass oil help sap the oil without causing excessive dryness.
Get rid of acne:
Lemongrass is an excellent choice for acne prone skin due to its antibacterial properties [3]. It is also a natural astringent which helps in minimizing pores and cleansing the skin thoroughly. The astringent properties are effective on oily skin and help in keeping the oils away without over drying the skin. Lemongrass oil can also be used to eliminate blackheads and cleansing of pores.
Healthy hair:
The high volatility and lipophilicity of the lemongrass makes penetration of the oil easy and thus helps in strengthening the hair follicles. This leads to shinier and healthier hair and promotes hair growth. Lemongrass is thus useful in boosting hair growth and preventing hair thinning.
Body odour:
Baking soda is effective in eliminating body odour. Add to it a few drops of fragrant, citrusy and refreshing lemongrass oil and you have a fragrant deodorant ready.
